Supporting Students
Being young today looks different than it did even ten years ago. Academic pressure starts earlier and rarely lets up. Social media has changed how kids see themselves and each other. Friendships form and dissolve in group chats. And underneath all of it, students are still trying to do the most basic, human work of growing up: figuring out who they are, what they believe, and where they belong.
At Soto Therapy, we work with children, adolescents, and young adults to help them build real, lasting tools, not quick fixes, not talking points, but genuine skills for managing anxiety, navigating friendships, handling pressure, and understanding themselves. We've spent decades in Montgomery County schools and communities, and we know the specific pressures local students face, from competitive academic environments to the pace of life in the DC area.

How We Work With Students
Every student who comes to us gets a plan built around them, not a template. For younger children, that might mean play therapy, using play as a natural language for working through feelings that are hard to put into words. For adolescents and teens, sessions often look more like a mix of talk therapy and skills building: identifying thought patterns, building coping strategies, and practicing how to handle real situations before they happen. For families who want it, we bring parents into the process too, because a student's progress is stronger when the people at home understand what's happening and how to support it.
We're also fully bilingual. Every service we offer for students is available in English and Spanish, so language is never a barrier to getting real support.
What We Treat
Our clinicians work with students on a wide range of concerns, including:
Anxiety and panic, including the kind that hides behind straight A's and a packed schedule Depression and low motivation ADHD and executive functioning struggles Self-esteem and body image Behavioral concerns at home or school Learning difficulties and the frustration that comes with them Grief and loss Adjustment to major transitions, from a new school to a new sibling to a move Peer relationships and social difficulties The specific mental health impact of social media and constant connectivity
Presentations and Workshops for Schools
Beyond individual therapy, we bring mental health education directly into schools, PTAs, and community organizations across Montgomery County and the DC area, at no cost. Every presentation is built on peer-reviewed research, fact-checked, and designed to actually land with students, not just check a box. Current presentations include:
Thriving Through Summer: Helping high-achieving students protect their mental health through the transition from the structure of the school year into the openness of summer, and back again.
Phones, Algorithms and Your Brain: A close look at how social media and algorithm-driven platforms are shaping the adolescent brain, and what students and parents can do about it.
Perfectionism Is Lying to You: A companion presentation that helps students redefine what success actually looks like, without losing the drive that makes them who they are.
Fitting In vs. Belonging: An honest conversation about the difference between fitting in and truly belonging, and how students can build authentic connection instead of just blending in.
The Decision Makers: Raising Students Who Can Handle Anything: A resilience-focused presentation on decision making, helping students build confidence in their own judgment.
Freshman Mental Health (You've Got This): A presentation designed specifically for the transition into college, addressing the mental health challenges that come with that leap.
Schools interested in bringing any of these presentations to their community can reach out directly to schedule.
